Upson could be sold in January, amid contract row

West Ham captain Matthew Upson could be set to leave the club for a small fee in January after negotiations over a new deal stalled.

Upson is available on a free transfer in the summer but will not extend his £60,000-a-week deal at Upton Park and looks set depart for pastures new, with Liverpool and Tottenham monitoring the situation.

However, the club are keen to recoup some of the £6 million that they spent on him in January 2007 and are looking at a quick sale.

"Matt Upson has been made a fabulous offer, and he might struggle to get more elsewhere, but time will tell," a source close to the club told ESPNsoccernet. ''Clearly, given the circumstances, there is a chance he'll go for a reasonable fee in January.''

Ideally, West Ham want their star to stay, but Upson has rejected, so far, all overtures to extend his contract. Liverpool failed in the summer with a £9 million bid, illustrating how much new manager Roy Hodgson covets the centre-back.
